Martial Arts for Kids and Teens in Siem Reap

May 202610 min readBy Kon Phanet & Ramon

Kids and teens are welcome in Kun Khmer Club's regular 5:00 PM group class in Siem Reap, training alongside adults rather than in a separate junior program. If you'd rather have a dedicated time just for a group of kids or teens, message us ahead and coaches Kon Phanet and Ramon can arrange one outside the standard session, with pricing based on group size. A single visit to the regular class is $9, all gear is provided, and training is barefoot on mats — there's nothing to buy before a first class.

Why Martial Arts Training Is Good for Young People

The World Health Organization recommends that children and adolescents get at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity most days, and a structured striking class is one of the more effective ways to hit that in a single session, since it combines cardio, coordination, and strength work without feeling like a gym routine. Beyond fitness, a class built around discipline — following instructions, respecting a coach, controlling your own effort in partner drills — tends to carry over into how a young person handles themselves outside the gym too. Training under coaches who've fought professionally also means teens get correction from people who understand technique at a level a generic fitness class instructor usually doesn't, which matters if a teenager is serious about actually getting good rather than just staying busy for an hour.

How We Keep It Safe for Younger Students

  • No sparring requirement for beginners of any age — technique comes first
  • Coaches actively adjust pace and correction for younger or less experienced students in the group
  • Striking is built on pads and bags before any partner contact work is introduced
  • Gear — gloves, wraps, and pads — is provided, so there's no risk from mismatched or worn-out equipment
  • Sessions are supervised throughout by Kon Phanet or Ramon, not left to run themselves

Regular Class vs. a Dedicated Youth Group

Because there's no separate junior class built into the daily schedule, most kids and teens simply join the 5:00 PM group session and train next to adults, which tends to work well for teenagers especially, and for younger kids with a parent or guardian nearby. If you'd rather have a class made up entirely of kids or teens — for a school group, a family activity, or a set of friends — that's arranged separately from the standard session, and Phanet or Ramon will work out timing and pricing with you directly once they know the group size. Either way, the training itself doesn't get watered down: it's the same Kun Khmer fundamentals taught to everyone else, just paced appropriately. Booking a standard class needs no advance notice at all — just arrive before 5 PM; for a private youth group, reach out on WhatsApp, Telegram, or call +855 96 228 8585 with rough numbers and preferred timing so we can confirm a plan.

Bringing a younger child?

There's no hard minimum age for the 5:00 PM class, but younger children do best with a parent or guardian training alongside them or nearby. If you're unsure whether it suits your child's age, message us first on WhatsApp and we'll give you an honest answer before you come.

What Progress Looks Like for a Young Student

A teenager or child who trains consistently in the 5 PM class builds skill the same way an adult does — through pad rounds and gradual technique layering, not through a separate "kids curriculum" that's watered down. In the first few weeks, expect stance, guard, and basic punches to be the focus; kicks, and eventually knees and elbows, get introduced once those fundamentals are comfortable. Parents often notice changes beyond the technical side too — better focus, more comfort following instructions from an adult who isn't a parent or teacher, and a physical outlet that's harder to get from typical after-school activities in Siem Reap. Because the class is mixed-level and mixed-age by default, a teenager training here is also learning to hold their own around adults, which tends to build confidence differently than training only with peers their own age. If a family wants to track progress specifically, that's a conversation worth having directly with Kon Phanet or Ramon, since coaching adjustments are made person by person rather than against a fixed junior syllabus.
