What to Wear to a Kun Khmer Class in Cambodia

May 20268 min readBy Kon Phanet & Ramon

Bring breathable athletic wear, a full water bottle, and a spare shirt — that covers most of what you need for a first Kun Khmer class in Siem Reap. Gloves and pads are typically the gym's side of the equation; clothing and hydration are yours. Nothing on this list requires a special shopping trip before your first visit — most beginners show up in whatever workout clothes they already own.

What to wear

  • Athletic shorts or leggings that allow full range of motion for kicks
  • A breathable t-shirt or sports top — moisture-wicking fabric if you have it
  • Kun Khmer is trained barefoot on the mats and in the ring, so you won't need shoes for the training area — just come with clean, bare feet
  • Hand wraps if you have your own — they protect your wrists and knuckles under gloves
  • A hair tie if you have longer hair, so it stays out of your face during pad work
  • Avoid clothing with zippers, buckles, or heavy jewelry that could catch or cause injury during pad work
  • A small towel is useful given how much most people sweat training in Siem Reap's climate
  • Sunscreen if you're walking to or from class during the day, since Siem Reap sun is strong year-round

Siem Reap's heat and humidity

Cambodia runs hot and humid year-round, and Siem Reap is no exception. The CDC notes that heat dissipation through sweat becomes far less effective once air temperature and humidity both climb — which is exactly the combination you'll usually be training in. That makes hydration a bigger factor here than it might be training somewhere temperate: drink water before you arrive, not just during class, bring more than you think you'll need, and pack a change of clothes for after — it's genuinely worth it. The CDC's general heat-safety guidance also recommends taking breaks when you can and being alert to symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or unusually heavy sweating that stops — those are signs to slow down or stop, not push through.

Trying it out, and before you go

If you're not sure how much gear to invest in, a single day pass ($9) is a low-commitment way to try a class before deciding whether to book a week ($69), a month ($129), or the six-week fight camp ($299). Most beginners don't need to buy anything beyond clothing and water for a first visit. Message ahead via WhatsApp, Telegram, or phone (+855 96 228 8585) if you have gear questions, check Google Maps or Facebook for location and updates, and arrive a few minutes early to get fitted with the gloves and wraps we provide before class starts. If you do decide to commit to regular training afterward, that's the point to start thinking about your own gloves and wraps — buying gear before you know you'll stick with it is usually unnecessary.

FAQ

Do I need to buy gloves before my first class?

No — at Kun Khmer Club all training gear, including gloves and hand wraps, is provided free, so you don't need to buy anything for your first class.

Can I train in running shoes?

No — Kun Khmer is trained barefoot on the mats and in the ring, so you won't need running shoes.

What if I don't own hand wraps?

They're a low-cost accessory worth buying if you plan to train regularly, but they're not usually mandatory for a first visit.

How much water should I bring?

More than feels necessary — Siem Reap's heat and humidity increase fluid loss during exercise, so a full bottle is a reasonable minimum.

Should I train on a day pass before buying gear?

That's a reasonable approach — a $9 day pass lets you see what a class actually feels like before spending on anything beyond basic athletic wear you likely already own.
